Shinjuku — Neon nights, tiny bars, a vast garden and Tokyo’s best-connected station.
West & central Tokyo

Getting to Shinjuku

Almost everything goes to Shinjuku. The only hard part is finding the right exit when you arrive.

Shinjuku Station is served by JR (Yamanote, Chuo, Sobu, Saikyo and Shonan-Shinjuku lines), the private Odakyu and Keio railways, the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line and the Toei Shinjuku and Oedo subway lines. The Narita Express runs here direct from Narita Airport, and airport limousine buses stop at the Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal (Busta Shinjuku) above the station’s south side and at the big west-side hotels.

Fares below are approximate adult single fares paid by IC card and may have changed; check current prices before you travel. For how the airport options compare across the whole city, see our getting to Tokyo guide.

Getting around Shinjuku

On foot: the east-side sights — Kabukicho, Golden Gai, Hanazono Shrine and the department stores — are all within a 10-minute walk of the East Exit. Omoide Yokocho is beside the West Exit, the government building 10 minutes further west through the underground concourse, and Shinjuku Gyoen 10 minutes south-east (or one stop on the Marunouchi Line to Shinjuku Gyoen-mae).

Exits: follow the yellow overhead signs for “East Exit”, “West Exit”, “South Exit” or “New South Exit” before you go through the gates; crossing the station once outside can take a quarter of an hour. Busta Shinjuku, for highway buses to Kawaguchiko and Hakone, is at the New South Exit.

Onward: Odakyu trains to Hakone and highway buses and Fuji Excursion trains to Kawaguchiko all start here — see getting to Hakone and getting to Mount Fuji.
