Areas at a glance
- Roppongi Hills: Mori Tower, cinema, shops and the Keyakizaka slope.
- Tokyo Midtown and Nogizaka: museums, a park and smart restaurants.
- Roppongi Crossing: bars, clubs and late-night food.
- Azabudai Hills and Kamiyacho: teamLab Borderless, new shops and food halls.
- Shiba Park: Tokyo Tower and Zojo-ji.
- Azabu-Juban: a village-like shopping street with old sweet shops and good dining.
Eating and drinking
This is Tokyo’s most international dining district, from high-end sushi to burgers and vegan cafés. The food markets and restaurant floors in the three developments are the easiest way to choose; Azabu-Juban is better for traditional sweets and relaxed dinners.
Money-saving ideas
- The “Roppongi Art Triangle” museums give small discounts on showing a ticket stub from one of the others — ask at the desk.
- The National Art Center’s building, Azabudai Hills’ gardens and Zojo-ji are free.
- Tokyo Tower looks best from outside: Shiba Park and the temple grounds cost nothing.
Nightlife safety
Several embassies warn visitors about drink-spiking and credit-card fraud in a minority of Roppongi bars. Do not follow street touts, however persistent; choose venues yourself, keep your drink in sight and avoid leaving a card behind the bar. With those precautions the area is as safe as anywhere in Tokyo.
